About the College

The predecessors of the College of Nyíregyháza were institutions of higher education with national and international prestige, looking back on forty years of professional traditions and experience. The new College of Nyíregyháza was established on the 1st of January 2000, with the intention of preserving the values accumulated by the predecessors and implementing a strategy that is able to meet the ever-changing demands of the 21st century. In the past ten years, infrastructural development projects have given the college the necessary facilities and infrastructure and state-of-the-art technology and equipment. Today, the campus is a real town within the town, where students and teachers use the most advanced technical equipment and educational facilites available today. The campus is a pleasant complex of modern buildings located in a picturesque park, excellent to spend some relaxed moments of rest there. The insitution is now a lot more than a college; it is professional, cultural and arts centre of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county.

The infrastructural development of the campus and the increase of the number of students are important objectives, but the leaderhsip of the college also attributes great importance to quality assurance. Research is a basic responsibility of all our lecturers, in addition to teaching, as research is a part of the philosophy of the college. A key to the success of the college is the well-structured and well-organized system of the departments. Based upon that structure, it is possible to flexibly combine, modify and amend the system of courses and subject majors offered to the students. The degrees awarded by the college are acknowledged all over Europe, and our former students are successful in all segments of the labour market. The five faculties of the college offer thirty undergraduate courses, several postgraduate (MA courses) and a range of post-secondary courses.

Our image of the future...

The new mission of the College of Nyíregyháza is to become a centre of knowledge, covering the entire vertical system of higher education from undergraduate through postgraduate to doctoral and post-doctoral courses with a powerful R+D potential and a considerable regional effect. We are creating a student-centred, effectively managed institution of higher education that is open to the challenges of the environment, with special attention to training professionals for the needs of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county and Nyíregyháza in a system of cooperation with actors of the business world and the local community.

Our Institution Development Plan comprises three programmes:

  1. Knowledge for equal opportunities – academic programme. The purpose of the programme is to create the entire vertical system of higher education from undergraduate through graduate and postgraduate levels to doctoral and post-doctoral courses, and the system of communications between the various levels. Special attention is to be paid to interdisciplinarity, the practical side of the training and the information technology instruction, thus improving the chances of our students in the labour market. The major components of the programme include Virtual Campus (e-learning and life-long learning), the further development of the Alumni and Career Office, the creation of a Regional History and Arts Centre and a Regional Teacher Training and Further Training Centre. The college also pays attention to shaping and developing the value system and socio-cultural sensitivity of students.
  2. Green Region – research and development programme

We place emphasis on developing the natural- and technical scientific research and development potential of the college, adding new priorities to our R+D portfolio. The college shall, in this way, be even more capable of meeting the environment-conscious expectations and requirements of companies, of monitoring and preserving the natural environment of the area. The major projects of the K+F programme include development concepts regarding the BioMonitoring and Environment Studies Centre, the conversion of the practice farm into a multifunctional unit and enlarging the Molecular Research Institute.
  3. Dynamic networking

We are creating a portfolio of services, based upon the excellent infrastructure of the college. With the help of the new portfolio, the college will be capable of providing a range of fee-paying services in terms of technology, culture, sports and recreation. In order to attain that goal, we arrange the specific services into groups and categories and assign them to the Technical and Agricultural Centre, Campus-Land, Village Tourism and Catering Training Centre, the riding track and the Further Training Centre.

Several of the projects under the Institution Development plan synergically support and reinforce each other, thus improving the regional importance of the College of Nyíregyháza and its economic and innovative effieciency.
